Azz’aan

Brothers and Sisters!

Assalam o Alleyykum

[Peace be Upon You]

It is natural phenomenon that when someone is wanted a call is made for him.

Brothers and Sisters! Salat is integral part of mankind’s life which is a mean to get in touch and communicate with Allah five times a day to perform Salat.

Brothers and Sisters! In short, during the life of Khatim ul Anbiyya (SAW) there was a meeting and consultations were asked for as to what is the best mean of calling Muslims to come to perform Salat in Masjid. In the meeting no mean to call Muslim to perform Salat was determined.

Brothers and Sisters! The following day some of the Sahaba (RTU) dreamt about the wording of Azz’aan. They came to Prophet (SAW) and told Him (SAW) about the dream. Brothers and Sisters! Dreams are upon the behest of Allah and it was determined that when the time for the Salat will fall due one of the Sahabas will make Azz’aan. The text of Azz’aan is as below:

First: Calls for the Greatness of Allah (SWT):

  • Allahhu Akbar    (Allah is the Greatest)
  • Allahhu Akbar     (Allah is the Greatest)
  • Allahhu Akbar     (Allah is the Greatest)
  • Allahhu Akbar     (Allah is the Greatest)

Second: twice bears the ‘Shahadah’ (Witness) of the Oneness of

Allah (SWT):

  • Ash-hadu a (n) l-la-il-aha Illalahu
  • Ash-hadu a (n) l-la-il-aha IIlalahu

(I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship besides Allah)

Third: twice bears the ‘Shahadah’ (Witness), of the Prophethood of Hazrat Mohammad (SAW):

  • Wa Ash-hadu Anna Muhammadan Abduhu Wa Rasuluh
  • Wa Ash-hadu Anna Muhammadan Abduhu Wa Rasuluh

(I bear witness that Muhammad (SAW) is the Messenger of Allah)

Fourth: twice calls for the performance of ‘As Salat’:

  • Hayy’a Al Salat     (Come to offer Salat)
  • Hayy’a Al Salat     (Come to offer Salat)

Fifth: twice reminds about the ‘success’

  • Hayy’a A’lal’falah    (Come for Success)
  • Hayy’a A’lal’falah    (Come for Success)

Sixth: again, twice calls for the ‘Greatness’ of Allah (SWT)

  • Allahhu Akbar     (Allah is the Greatest)
  • Allahhu Akbar     (Allah is the Greatest)

Seventh: Calls for the ‘Oneness’ of Allah (SWT)

  • La’Ilaha’ il’lalah     (There is no worthy of worship                          besides Allah)
  • La’Ilaha’ il’lalah      (There is no worthy of worship                          besides Allah)

Brothers and Sisters! If we make analysis of the text of the Azz’aan, we will see that whole of Deen e Islam is embedded in it.

How?

Brothers and Sisters! The object of life is:

  • To Praise Allah – This is reflected by Allahhu Akbar

  • To be witness of Allah – This is reflected by ‘Ash-hadu a (n) l-la-il-aha Illalahu

  • To be witness of Khatim ul Anbiyya (SAW) – this is reflected by Wa Ash-hadu Anna Muhammadan Abduhu Wa Rasuluh

  • To perform Salat – this is reflected by Hayy’a Al Salat    (Come to offer Salat)

  • To be successful – this is reflected by Hayy’a A’lal’falah    (Come for Success)

Imperativeness of Azz’aan

Brothers and Sisters! Imperativeness of Azz’aan can be judged by the context of following Hadith:

The Prophet (SAW) said to the effect:

If a person is in great misery and trouble then he should wait for Azz’aan and after responding to the Azz’aan he should make Dua’a. Insha’allah! His Dua’a will be accepted by Allah with His (SWT) Grace.

CONCLUSION

Brothers and Sisters! Azz’aan is call to perform Salat and in fact whole of Deen e Islam is embedded in it. Therefore, when you listen Azz’aan you should keep quiet and response when the Mu’azzan pauses to take breath.

May Allah be with You

Wass’a’lam

[May Allah Bless You]
